On the Extent and Aims of a National Museum of Natural History

The establishment of a national Natural History Museum was an idea opposed almost unanimously by the scientific community when it was proposed by Richard Owen (1804-92) in 1859. This is the text of one of Professor Owen's many speeches, first published in 1862, advocating its cause.
